There are several different aspects that you need to understand about merchant accounts before you decide on which account provider to sign up with.

Generally, the people who DO NOT take the time to understand these principals end up with a disturbing surprise when they get their processing statement at the end of the month, or when they cannot actually process credit card transactions.

Please, do not ask a card processing company for their best rate. What everyone needs to know and understand is that there are many charges that can be applied to an account. So please be well informed by your service representative, and make sure that he/she explains all of the fees that apply to your account before you sign up. Such as standard transactions fees, and monthly minimums, for example.

Also keep in mind the rate that is charged can vary a great deal depending on when and where the transaction is taking place, to what information is recorded at the time of the transaction.

Again, I stress that the only real way to understand how much it will cost you to accept credit cards with each different company is to have a proper consultation with each company’s representative so that they can explain all the charges.

However, most reps won’t do this, being that they prefer the hard core sales tactics and the hiding of hidden fees in the contracts. If approached by any company representative that uses these tactics and tricks, this should set alarm bells off and ringing and the company should be avoided, no matter what they are promising.

Also it’s very important to choose a company with an excellent customer service and technical support record. This can’t be stressed enough.

If the systems are not functioning properly how can you accept or process transactions? Be sure when you make your choice for your merchant account service provider, that they not only have 24/7 phone support, but also online support as well.

If you can’t get through for authorization or other problems then you can’t accept payments. Either way it is significantly going to affect your business and your profits.
