Meeting a client is a big deal and you should treat it as a big deal. Even if you do not have the money to dress like you are incredibly successful, you can certainly appear to be successful. When you meet a potential client it is important that you represent yourself professionally.

What is your email address?

Domain names are so incredibly inexpensive (typically $7.95) that there is essentially no excuse not to have one. And once you do you can have a professionally, corporate sounding email such as VPMarketing @ JohnSmithMarketing.com. That certainly is a lot more professional that Iamababydaddy @ email .com or getjiggywithme @ email .com and so on. What would you think of your email if you were a client/customer/employer?

Cell Phones/Voice Mail

Whatever phone or voice mail you are using for clients to reach you should be professional. You don’t want them to listen to Led Zeppelin for 2 minutes before you mention that you are unable to answer because it is 4:20 and you are smoking pot with your home skillets. Be appropriate. For example, “You have reached Dara Sterling. I am unavailable to answer the phone. Please leave a message and I will return your call as soon as possible.”

Appearance

Always be well groomed. Make sure you shower, clip your fingernails, comb or brush your hair, and brush your teeth.

When you meet with a client you are allowed to be “business casual” if the circumstances call for it, but you should always be dressed either the same, or better than the client.

If your client is wearing a suit, and you will look totally out of place if you are not in a suit, too, then by all means, wear a suit. Don’t forget nice clean shoes and a conservative tie.

If you do not have to wear a suit, then men should choose dressy slacks and a simple button down or a polo styled shirt. Tucking in your shirt and wearing a belt would be a plus.

Women should not appear over-dressed or wear anything revealing. Dark dressy pants or a knee-length skirt and a simple blouse should be perfect. Avoid open-toe shoes, as they appear much too casual. Try to wear dress shoes instead of casual ones.

Women can wear heels, but they should not be more than a few inches.   Legs should never be left bare, so wear hose with any dress or skirt.

You should also avoid certain items. Take off your sunglasses when you are indoors and at night. If you wear a hat, make sure it is appropriate for the whether and occasion.  Cut down on the bling. A high school or college ring is fine. Obviously a wedding ring would be fine, too. But flashy necklaces (especially a cross the size of a kiwi) and bracelets, etc. can be distracting when meeting people face-to-face.  Do not wear t-shirts, and certainly do not wear t-shirts with writing on them, especially if the writing is political or sexual in nature. Make sure your clothes are neat and clean and appropriate for the weather and occasion.

Non-traditional jewelry or accessories should be small and tasteful. Non-traditional piercings, such as nose or tongue, should be removed. Tattoos should be covered.

Social Protocal

When you meet with a client, make sure you stand or sit up straight, maintain eye contact, and pay attention. To what is being said to you. Don’t forget to turn off your cell phone’s ring. Keep it on vibrate if you must.  And under no circumstances (unless your wife or sister, etc) is expecting to give birth any minute) should you look at your cell phone if a call should come in.

Speak slowly, clearly, and think for a moment before you reply. No matter how well you present yourself, it can matter very little if you talk too fast, no one understands you, or if you speak with a great deal of slang. You should always be polite.  Greet people with a smile and introduce yourself. During the conversation, avoid negative conversations and topics that may be offensive.

Make sure you keep perfumes or colognes to a minimum. Not only can the scent be offensive or distracting to the person you are meeting with, there is also a chance of causing an allergic reaction and that is not a good way to create the type of memorable impression you want to make.

Most of all, be sincere and confident and yourself and you will impress those you meet and appear professional.
